Strangely, reviews that bitch about how ugly the women in a given scene are tend to get, in the parlance, “neg-banged” all the way to the bottom of the page. And reviews that ask, “Why the fuck would anyone be turned on by this?” also tend to get neg-banged; often, the hearty defenses of the joys of, say, GILF porn or BBW scenes rise to the top of the review pile.

This confused me for a long time. You’d think this a community of porno fanatics would be harsh on ugly women (and, to be fair, sometimes they are). But by and large, the good folks at Videobox realize that they’re all here to indulge their inner kink, and recognize that attraction is an intensely personal issue. If someone says, “Why the hell do women have to get these stupid tattoos?” you can pretty much bet they’ll be at the bottom, buried under a lot of counter-reviews that ask why the hell you’re watching it, then.

I'd long suspected that if men were nearly as picky about how women look as the trollacracy implies, the human race would have died out long ago. Nice to see some evidence.

Wait, what, GILF?

I did hear VPILF today. Made me laugh the first time.

Steven Pinker's How the Mind Works has some great bits on male unpickiness. After giving a long list of criteria women use in selecting a mate, he then lists men's criteria for female suitability as "two X chromosomes." He also mentions a tribe of aesthetes who are so offended by female ugliness that women they regard as ugly are banished from the village and live in a kind of leper colony down the beach. These women still manage to get pregnant; tribal elders explain this by saying that they copulate with demons.

Ugh, evolutionary psychology.

And just because some men aren't picky doesn't mean all of them aren't. Ask any woman who's fat, plain, old, disabled, etc. Plenty of men can and do ignore women who don't meet their "standards," including the Nice Guys™ who whine about how bitchez won't give them a second look because they're neither hawt nor rich.

It wouldn't shock me if the trollacracy is a small but noisy and destructive minority.

For purposes of this discussion, I'm going to distinguish between the men who attack when they see an ugly woman, and the men who are afraid of the trolls. I think the former group is much smaller than the latter.

I've had a theory for a long time that the definition of a "real man" is being held hostage by an aggressive minority.

I have about as much sympathy for teh poor scared menz who don't stand up to sexist assholes on behalf of women as I do for religious moderates who don't stand up to their fundie co-believers.

So? Trying to figure out what's going on isn't the same thing as saying you should have sympathy for everyone involved.

"What's going on" is that they encourage the "trollocracy" by not telling them to put a sock in it. I don't respect that and I think it makes them part of the problem.

Pinker actually isn't guilty of most of the criticisms aimed at what people think he is saying. Certainly he never says that "natural is always good" - quite the opposite, in fact. OTOH, there are a bunch of lumpen evopsychs around who do conform to the stereotype portrayed here. They remind me of the evangelical behaviorists of my youth whose answer to everything was "It's conditioning!" Science, like most things, is subject to fashion.

I could go on about this at length, but I already did, albeit not terribly seriously.
