C. S. Lewis described himself as 'Conservative' in mid-century, when he and Tolkien were some of the unfashionable few wanting to conserve Old Growth forests, old buildings, colorful customs (GKC) etc. Whether that faction was called Tories or 'Conservatives' then I'm not sure. But many of his causes are now assigned to 'Liberals' (including anti-vivisection).
