Bernard Shaw made much the same joke earlier. There is a scene in Act I of Man and Superman where John Tanner, the socialist hero, is harassing Roebuck Ramsden, a man a generation older, about his old-fashioned ideas, and Ramsden indignantly protests that he is as advanced a thinker now as he was in his youth.
