Socks and the decline of civilization

Recently, I bought a package of Fruit of the Loom Everyday Basics women's socks at CVS (a major drugstore chain), and was disgusted to find that on some of the socks, the elastic which should hold the sock up collapsed after two or three washings.

For logistical reasons which made sense at the time, I came into the possession of a package of Everyday Basics men's socks (2x more durable it says on the package), and one of them collapsed on the first wearing.

Both genders of socks are white with gray heels and toes.

I really didn't expect a product from a major manufacturer sold in a chain drugstore in a decent neighborhood to be so shoddy. Perhaps I should have been warned when the plastic beads on the bristles of a Revlon hairbrush (bought at the CVS) fell off rather quickly.

I buy 100% cotton Jockey Elance underwear (on sale, either in a store or at their Website) and cotton socks (usually on sale) from Lands End. They all wear quite well for me. In any case, I usually go through the toes of my socks long before the elastic wears out. (My big toes turn up at the end - even with the nails trimmed close, they scrape through the sock fibers in a year or so .... even with reinforced socks like Gold Toe.)

I'm a big fan of Gold Toe, for their durability. They've become somewhat harder to find, now that my local go-to stores (Macy's and Target) stopped carrying them, in favor of inferior house brands. I've been able to find them at Kohl's, though, on a regular basis.
