Bottom-up help for the economy?

I don't know whether this question has an answer, but I've been wondering whether there's anything people generally could do which would be good for the economy, rather than just waiting for the right high-level policy decision to come along (whatever that is) or for the winds to change.

Extra credit for answers which aren't short-term unduly risky for individuals. In other words, I don't think "just spend more" is the answer.
