Here's a list with descriptions. Here's one that looks promising: Librarians Index to the Internet--sites chosen by librarians.

Link found at Newmark's Door by way of Marginal Revolution.

>LII (http://lii.org/) has an RSS feed for updates, but I haven't yet found out if it's available as an LJ feed. It also can come as a weekly e-mail.

Granted it isn't a search engine, but neither are a lot of resources mentioned: I can't trust a list like that, that doesn't include Wikipedia.

I'm just sayin'.

Good point--I'd forgotten that I was looking for wikipedia among the urls and was surprised not to see it. On the other hand, it still could be a useful pointers to things I haven't already heard of.

In the interests of compulsiveness, I checked the links for other search engine lists, and none of them list wikipedia, either. Fairness simply forces us to acknowledge that wikipedia isn't a search engine.

On the other hand, any list of best reference sites (anyone have one handy?) should include wikipedia.
