"In an era of information, context is the ultimate luxury"

This was at the beginning of the first issue (1989) of Mondo 2000, a magazine about the information age with very pretty graphics that gave this quote a two page spread-- I think the quote is from Marshall McLuhan, but googling doesn't turn up a source.

This brought the quote to mind.

Addendum: [livejournal.com profile] agrumer points out in comments that the magazine may well have been Wired, and if so the quote was a little different, and while there was a two-page spread with a quote, it may have been a different quote.

Are you sure it wasn't from the first issue of Wired (Mar 1993)? Magazine founder Louis Rossetto wrote an editorial in which he said "in the age of information overload, the ultimate luxury is meaning and context." That issue also opened with a McLuhan quote, running across several pages, but it was (I think) a different quote.

In the age of instantaneous publishing, the ultimate luxury is fact-checking and copy-editing!
