Alicorn says:
Well, in the department of actual running, I have some kind of mysterious lung issue that means I need to gasp for air a lot even when I'm sitting still and have been for hours and it only gets worse if I try to do exercise more strenuous than a leisurely walk. (Armchair diagnoses appreciated, incidentally - so far I've stumped multiple doctors and new Google keywords are good.)

and it occurred to me that there's enough medical knowledge on my flist that it might be possible to get some reasonable hypotheses about what's going on with her.

My first thought was: Anemia. If your blood is broken such that it can't transport enough oxygen around, you'll get winded immediately and pant like a dog on a hot day. And things other than anemia which make one's red blood cells not function right.

And then I clicked through and saw she was already being treated for anemia, so WTF? Maybe the iron supplement is not sufficient? Maybe it's a different kind of anemia than the doctor thinks, or some other blood disorder?

Asthma is an obvious candidate; the fact that she's never taken a breath-volume test is worrying. "Are you getting enough air? (yes/no)" is an obvious question, and one that seems not to have been asked.

Another question -- has she ever been in the US Southwest? There's a lung fungus that's fairly common there called "valley fever". Doctors outside the area generally don't know about it.

Sounds like she's getting the usual mantra from doctors who don't want to have to think -- "Your weight is Too High, your blood pressure is Too High, your cholesterol is Too High. You need to go on a diet of nothing but Brussels sprouts, with an occasional helping of liver as a Special Treat. And exercise like an Olympic athlete." She needs a doctor who will listen to what she says. They're hard to find.

Serious shortness of breath was probably my major symptom of a pulmonary embolism. Not sure what "stumped multiple doctors" means in this case, but I hope it includes actual medical tests to rule that out.

Have her doctors ruled out Wegener's granulomatosis (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/wegeners-granulomatosis/DS00833)?
