Scott McCloud has also written _Understanding Comics_, which I recommend to anyone who's interested in understanding things, regardless of whether they're fascinated by comics. It gets into how time is handled in comics (and why a lot of what's important is between the panels), why simplified images can be so emotionally effective, that there are different percentages of sorts of scenes between American and Japanese comics, and probably any quantity of cool stuff that I'm not remembering at the moment.

Good news: November 30th isn't opposite Philcon or Thanksgiving/Darkover.

Scott McCloud's tour.

A new Scott McCloud book? I hope he comes out here ...

There's one between "Understanding" and "Making" -- Reinventing Comics, which goes into how new technology and the New Economy offer all kindza possibilities for comics creators.

I've read _Re-inventing Comics_, but was underwhelmed. Do you think it was comparable to _Understanding Comics_?

I think anything is comparable to anything. ("Apples and oranges?" No problem: one's red and smooth and sweet, the other's orange and bumpy and kinda sour.)

But, yeah, I know what you mean, I'm just being a PitA. No, I don't think Reinventing was of the same calibre as Understanding, but I'd not go so far as "underwhelmed." I thought it a nudge above "pretty good," well under "excellent." Certainly not as rereadable as the first; certainly good enough that I'll be looking forward to the new one.
