I'm not sure what "combine with" actually would involve... I've given up on maintaining my journal here, due to a long story I won't repeat here, but I've fled to Greatest Journal (except for the occasional comment back here). Soon after, a friend created an RSS feed, which he and a few others read in their friends pages to keep up to date.
The feed isn't always an ideal solution - another person who travelled the same way had some anti-fans who indulged themselves leaving stupid messages on the comment area of her LJ feed; when she did not get any help from LJ abuse, she withdrew her permission for the feed. I don't know what happens after that, except that did get the feed yanked off LJ. But, as an example, I think that would be a pretty extreme case of what doesn't work from one journal site to the other.
There are ads, too, but only on the info page and when you logout. On your own journal there's no adverts, nor on the journals of others you might be looking at or commenting.
For what it's worth, I'm looking at Greatest Journal myself more as a transfer station, rather than an end destination.
