Nancy - I don't know anybody who hates Bombadil. (Though by the end of his life JRRT must have found him pretty irritating, due to all the questions he raised when plopped down in the middle of an otherwise rather neat cosmology. He just doesn't fit.)
I do think Jackson was absolutely correct to pull him out of the movie - though I'm sorry he didn't work out some better way to arm the hobbits for the fight at Weathertop, one that would have clearly given Meriadoc a Numenorian sword. I mean, Aragorn just happened to be carrying four swords with him? Whassupwiddat?
Even worse was Jackson's sticking the Old Man Willow bit into Fangorn (in the extended DVD), but that's another issue...
NEway, Bombadil is both vital to the story-as-written and quite a bit of fun, even if his verse makes no sense...
