Is there any way to do a search on my friends list?

Searching for what? Text within one friend's journal? One friend's journal among all journals? Text within all of the journals you have friended?

Text within one friend's journal. I'm thinking of the times when I saw something I meant to link to or check up on but can't remember whose journal it was in.

I don't know any easy way to search multiple journals at once. But what I'm fond of doing to search within a journal is to go to Google and search for whatever keywords, and append "site:username.livejournal.com" as a keyword.

LJSeek.com's advanced search (http://www.ljseek.com/advsearch.php) will do that, I think. (I just did a small test and it seemed to do what you want.)

I've never managed to find what I was looking for through LJSeek; so I use Google's Blogsearch (http://blogsearch.google.com/) instead. Though neither will be any help if the entry is locked.
