I really like having the pretty stuff where it can be seen easily. Would it help if I used smaller images?

My screen resolution is 800x600 and I'm on dial-up, so I honestly don't know what your image looks like. All I know is that it makes it difficult to read my friends page.

Perhaps you could use a thumbnail and then put the larger image behind an lj-cut?
