Interesting, especially the issue of whether Viagra searchers want info (as I did when I recently did an encyclopedia article about it) or online sales.
I used to use Clusty. After using it a while, I noticed that with certain searches, some little-known sites got improbably high rankings. A pattern gradually emerged; anything with "free" in it would consistently turn up a certain website high in the rankings. For instance, it turned up when I was searching on "free vacation scam," which is rather appropriate in retrospect. These were in the regular hits, not in any form of sponsored links.
I concluded that either Clusty was easy to game or it was accepting payment for search rank, and gave up on it.
