This afternoon on NPR, a senior Republican congressman (I don't remember his name) said one reason Ted Kennedy was a pleasure to work with was that he know so much-- you can't compromise unless you know specifics. If all you've got is bumper sticker slogans, you can't work anything out.

I remember in my extensive reading about JFK many years ago that his opponents in the Congress often took him for a shallow rich pretty boy, and then he'd start asking question in committee, from memory, which demonstrated incredibly detailed knowledge of the subject at hand.

What caught my attention was not just that he knew a lot, or that knowing a lot is a good thing, but the new (at least to me) idea that knowing a lot is essential for working with people, at least if you've got more than one knowledgeable person in the mix.

I'm glad I know you in person. If I only knew you for your work, I'd be confused about why you seem to be denigrating "bumper sticker slogans." ;-D
