It was "at the time" part of the Ottoman Empire (before 1918) and part of the British Empire (after 1918). And the Zionists purchased their initial lands -- they did not steal them from the Palestinian Arabs. Violent hostility between Zionists and Palestinians started when the Palestinians attempted to engage in their time-honored practice of abusing Jews and discovered to their horror that these Jews had firearms, and were not afraid to use them.
