Pre-modern conversion to Judaism

teddywolf is is dealing with a professor who believes that there was no pre-modern conversion to Judaism because you can't convert into a tribe.

Could you guys help out with some info about earlier conversion and/or the Talmud on the subject?

And of course, any help with convincing people that their beautifully logical definitions should give way to how people actually behave would be appreciated.
