I've been finding that self-hatred isn't just that it sounds bad ("no one talks to a friend of mine like that!"), it's actively debilitating. And yes, demands of oneself to have never made a mistake is a sort of self-hatred.

Compassion and Self-Hate is a very good book. The very short version is that self-hatred is a semi-autonomous process which can be addressed as a problem in itself, and compassion is the way out.

I liked the poster and followed it to the site it came from. "Self-help for people who wouldn't be caught dead doing self-help" - now that's something I could get into!

I needed this today, thanks.

Here's a return that I've also found useful.

You're welcome. You might be interested in Core Transformation, a system based on the premise that people actually have natural access to a sense of peace, universal love, etc., but they convince themselves that they have to fulfill arbitrary conditions (always being respected, never making a mistake, etc.) before they're allowed to feel that good.
