In saying McGovern was a "libertarian hero," Nick Gillespie isn't saying he was libertarian, just that in his later life he was significantly more libertarian than most of his colleagues and took some courageous positions in that regard.
Russell Means was a Libertarian Party VP candidate, but he wasn't terribly consistent in his positions.
