From the Red Cross

# The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city.

If the Red Cross could get into the shelter, it could give food and water to people who need them desperately--life and death desperately. If people were attracted to the shelter by food and water, they'd be easier to evacuate. I believe the Red Cross is competent to evaluate whether bringing food and water to the shelter is a good idea.

I'm not sure what the best course of action is. I've seen a suggestion of a march on Washington and it might be the right thing--any other ideas? Or ideas for a right thing? I don't think pressuring Congress is going to do much. Afaik, Congress would let the Red Cross in.

I wouldn't say I've exactly been defending the Bush adminitstration, but I've thought that what they've been doing has largely been the result of greed, incompetence, irresponsibility, laziness, and in the case of Katrina, panic. Those are enough to be disasterous, but I didn't think Bush and crew were driven by malice. The easy thing would be to let the Red Cross in. They aren't doing the easy thing.

This should probably build to a climax of indignation, but if you aren't already indignant and horrified and terrified, I don't know what to say to you. I'd rather get this posted now.
