I've got a slogan I like a lot which is a spoiler for book six. Do you think it would be no big deal if I offered it for sale or would it be a bad thing?

Is Dumbledore dead, or is he pining for the fjords?

Personally, I don't get it.

As for your question, I think spoiler buttons should wait longer. There are revelations which work their way into the culture and are no longer spoilers. Everyone who cares knows that Gandalf comes back, and that Darth Vader is Luke's father. Dumbledore's death will be one of those eventually -- but not yet.

The joke is a not quite rational way of suggesting that Dumbledore might be back. There's enough phoenix symbolism that some fans are expecting him to get better.

I think there's an allusion which is just going far over my head.

He's not dead yet?

I like it. And i see no reason to not offer it for sale. (Though for the sticklers, and to be nice, you may want a card to stick in that slot reading "Book 6 Spoiler", and to display it in a back corner of the overall display.

Maybe Nancy could also sell a button that says, "Warning: This shirt contains spoilers."

fjords?

Is this some sort of Slartibartfast reference?

No, it's a reference to Monty Python's Dead Parrot Sketch.

I think you should go with:

"Dumbledore's dead, but he's getting better!"

How about one that says:

"Is he dead, or is he pining for the fjords?"

And a space to write in a name...Dumbledore, Elvis, etc.

Personally, I am expecting that Dumbledore is going to pull an Obi-Wan/Yoda...

Farrel,

I have written a whole piece on the different possibilities and permutations of returning from the dead in myths. It's here on Live Journal, and if I knew how this place worked I would offer you the link. Perhaps my wife can post the link (or did she already?).

I think spoiler buttons should wait longer, too. And when the time comes, I want "I still trust Snape" :).

I vote for holding off at least until the paperback has been out for a week or two.

This wizard is stone dead. He is not more. He has expired. If you hadn't nailed him to the tower, he'd be pushing up the daisies. He has breathed his last. He has gone to meet his maker.

This is an EX-Wizard!

That having been said, I like [livejournal.com profile] dcseain's idea.

How about:

Dumbledore's just pining for the fjords!

People who don't know the Dead Parrot sketch won't get it right away, and might ask you, then you can explain it's a joke on a major spoiler and if they haven't read HP6 to just back away slowly.
