I'm glad that she isn't a Supreme Court justice, but her life has been made worse mostly as a result of bad luck rather than because of her own mistakes. I think it would have taken unusually good judgement for her to have turned down the nomination.

I agree with you on all counts.

Her life may have been made better -- depending on what she wants from life.

Robert Bork's defeat brought him fame, a reputation in some circles as a martyr to conservative principles, and a wider audience for his opinions.

I expect Harriet Miers will get at least one book offer, and higher prominence in Texas politics.

Afaik, Bork lost out because of his beliefs. Miers lost out because no one could tell what she believed. When a little came out, it may have been too little too late to make her reputation with anyone, but we'll see.

Miers lost out because she wasn't honest and upfront about what she believes. Now, she might also have lost if she had been -- it's even possible that she doesn't actually have any beliefs about constitutional law -- but we'll probably never know.

Now she has nothing to look forward to but revenues speeches and a ghost-written book. Maybe a nice sinecure somewhere.

I'm contemptuous of her for whining that the Congressional inquiries about who the heck she is were "unfair"! Gimme a break, lady!

It would have taken good judgement for Bush to not have nominated her in the first place. That seems to be unusual.

Somebody on NPR this morning noted that she did a greater service by withdrawing than Dubya did by nominating her in the first place.

I don't blame Miers; I blame Bush for nominating her to a position where her qualifications fell short, and where she faced an obvious conflict of interest. She did the honorable thing in withdrawing.

More honorable still would have been declining to waste the country's time by accepting in the first place.
