I'm trying to open this file.

Apparently, I can read it with just about anything, but unfortunately, when my computer asked me what I wanted to read it with, I started with Adobe. Adobe can't read it, but I haven't figured out how to get Adobe to let go of it so that I can try reading it with something else. I have Windows 7.

Edited to add: [livejournal.com profile] agrumer has sent me an html version.

Reboot. Hard restart if necessary.

Caveat: I'm no Windows fan, or expert.

If you open the application first, and then use File-<Open, you can open things with applications other than the default.

In the file manager, if you right-click on your file, you will get an 'open with' option. At the bottom of the list there is a 'choose default application' (or similar) item; this should allow you to say that you want to always open it with something else.

This sometimes is an artefact of developers thinking they can open a file format and then encountering another app's proprietary variation, so applications unable to open the file when they say they can does not mean that the file is corrupt.

Good luck!
