China is doing this-- not just China (more in additional links), but this is terrifying. People there may have to guess how much enthusiasm is too much enthusiasm.
A lot of people would like to be able to detect sarcasm mechanically, it's not just about censorship.

Somewhat interesting, but not very good. Keeps talking about Easterners when they mean China. And I have no idea whether all Westerners-- or all western cultures-- have similar attitudes about humor.

The idea that one can't express sarcasm in writing is clearly based on the fact that nowhere in the history of literature have authors successfully conveyed sarcastic intent. (I said that in writing, so I should explain that I was being sarcastic.)
A </sarcasm> tag once made its way into an HTML draft. It exists only in the closing tag form. My 2011 article on the tag is the first result when I do a search, which must be an indication of its obscurity. Look at the comments by
