Hmm. I viewed -- and considered buying -- a flat in Edinburgh with a secret room. (It used to be the maid's bedroom, up a wee flight of stairs off the main hallway; the door was a wooden panel that had been wallpapered over once.)
Didn't go for it, in the end -- the room was fun, but they'd billed it as a double bedroom, and the flat was just too small.
Some would say, what's the fun of having a secret if nobody knows about it? It's not there for protection or anything. I suspect they really like showing it off. I'd say it's more a 'cool' room than a secret room, but they like calling it that.
I would think an actually secret room would be useful for keeping valuables in. A casual burglar probably wouldn't find it and provided the valuables were not something you used every single day it wouldn't be useless.
I remember in a house we used to live in the dead space above a cabinet had been used to store the really valuable jewelry.
