I was at Newbury Comics here in Cambridge today, and I saw a 'reading is sexy' button that was so like yours I think they might have scanned your buttons to make a font. It wasn't just a little 'nancyish', I would have sworn I was looking at one of yours if it wasn't smaller than yours are.

This is probably the button you saw, and it's similar to my lettering but it isn't my work. The lettering style I use most often is called Foundational. It was developed in the early nineteen hundreds by Edward Johnston, and isn't at all rare in calligraphy. It doesn't seem to have many typefaces based on it, though.

Here are some ways the "Reading is sexy" button is different from my work--the hairline (thinnest part of the stroke) is almost horizontal--I use a 45 degree slant. The s has a vertical serif on the top stroke which would be a pain to do with a pen, or at least I haven't figured out how to do it neatly.

The i has a round dot. I use a diamond.

The right-hand stroke of the y has a subtle bend that I like and will try imitating.

Thanks for being interested, and for me at least, time spent looking carefully at letters isn't wasted.

I don't know how big the "Reading is sexy" button is, but I'm doing 1" buttons as well as the 2 1/4" these days.

Yeah; I didn't think it was your work, I just thought it looked *so* similar to yours that it was a little odd. the button, btw, was 2"; which was why it stuck out so much from the rest of the band buttons and stuff at a record store; it *looked* like it was trying to look like a con button, if'n you know what I mean ;-)

I'm afraid I rarely wear the big buttons outside of cons (though I occasionally take out my 'if you're amused by what you've read, give me a dollar' button when I feel like having random conversations), but I have 5 or 6 1" buttons on my Kermit the Frog bag. I should do a mass button conversion ;-)
