Here's a spectacular image of the sun. I have no idea how it manages to look so
hot when most of the picture isn't even especially bright.

I also have no idea how to get that sort of image to show up in an lj entry--is it possible?

Thanks for the advice on how to get the image to show up--the problem was that I'd forgotten to right-click on the image. Previously, I'd used images which offered jpeg urls.

The little image I've got doesn't do the picture justice. I recommend going to the link and getting a relatively gigantic sun blasting out of your screen.

Link thanks to Geek Press.

Well, clicking on the image gives its URL as http://soho.esac.esa.int/data/realtime/eit_304/1024/latest.gif, so you could include that in an image tag (but that steals bandwidth, and - I suspect from the filename - changes the picture as it updates).

You could save the image and upload it somewhere, or save two consecutive versions and subtract one from the other (trying this now - no idea how long between updates: if it's short enough I'll try and get three consecutive images and make a fake "stereo" pair)

The hot is largely due to the color palette; all of the colors in the image are the ones we associate with fire and flame -- reds and oranges and yellows in various shades, with organic shapes and color mixing/distribution that we also associate with flame. Add in the corona (appearing as an outer glow) and we see "hot".

Right click, do a 'save image as' to your local machine. Then use GIMP or photoshop or paintshoppro or something to scale it down to a reasonable size. Then find an image hosting site (or if you have a webpage of your own, pop it into your public_html file, that's what I do). Use an image tag ( img src="whatever the URL is" encloded in < >'s) to show it inline. Or you can scale it down even smaller, and use the thumbnail size image as the link back to the original page, so people could choose whether or not to view the full, large version based on the smaller.

I think there's a way to get lj itself to host your images, but if so it probably requires a paid account so I've never really looked into it. Not a big deal for me, because I do have my own webserver to use, so it's easy enough to just host things from my machine. If you want someplace to host images like that, and don't want to bother with a commercial site, let me know and I'll see if I can coerce my male into giving you a folder on our server you can use.

Marvelous pic, and what popped into my head as I stared at it was:

"Mama always told me
not to look into
the heart of the sun.
But Mama--
that's where the FUN is!"
