I live in a rowhouse neighborhood without front yards, so it's very conveniant for treat or treaters, and the weather was very mild. I think there were more kids coming by than in any previous year.

The custumes looked pretty much store bought--there weren't any strikingly common costumes, though there did seem to be a fair number of ugly skull/zombie masks.

No costumeless teenagers asking for candy. Almost all the kids said thank you.

I chatted with my next door neighbor, who's an high school English teacher. Did you know "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" makes a good lead-in to _The Scarlet Letter_? I might just reread _The Scarlet Letter_. I haven't read it since I was a kid, and all I remember from it is the elaborate embroidery Hester Prynne did on her Scarlet A and the scar (welt?) spontaneously appearing on the guy after a nightmare(?).

I recommended Scott Westerfeld's _Uglies_ to her, and--just for the hell of it for a utopia/dystopia theme--Lafferty's _Past Master_.
