What I want is a scanner so I can do a Cafepress shop. I just need it to be a good enough cheap scanner.

Possible candidates: Canon LIDE
Canon Canoscan 8400f Flatbed Scanner, if shoplet.com is reliable.

I can't figure out why my current scanner (a Canon 924) produces jagged edges, even at 600 dpi. I got it from ebay. I suspect it came with crippleware, but I can't find the information about the software warning, and even if I could find it, when I did have the name of the software, it wasn't available online and the website it was from no longer exists. It's kind of like those disappearing magic shops from short stories, but much less interesting. I thought I posted about the details, but that post has disappeared, too. What I've learned from this is to get a new scanner from a recognized seller.

Oh dear, I looked at the title and said "Not the ones that make your head explode!"

Damn you Cronenburg, damn you!

have you tried Vuescan : http://www.hamrick.com/ it's compatible with lots of scanners

i use it and it's about the closest thing to a sovereign specific in the scanning world.

i can't remember what the free trial is like but might be worth a go...?

cheers

Will

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, the non-functioning scanner isn't on the list of 750.

I've been using Canon LIDE scanners, and I like 'em fine. I use Canon's Photoshop plug-in for the software end of things; I have no idea what sort of experience their stand-alone software gives.

I replaced my previous Epson Perfection Photo scanner with an Epson Perfection V200 Photo. Advantages over the previous scanner were increased resolution, USB2 for faster data transmission, and (most important of all), the lamp that it uses for transparency scanning hadn't gotten broken. The cost was somewhere around $100. I've used it for slides and negatives with good results, as well as regular scans. And it has a lid that lays flat for book scanning.
