At Voices in the Family, my local NPR station's psychology show, there's an hour-long serious discussion about the difficulties of male/female friendships.

I haven't listened to that yet, and am curious to do so. However, I have definitely noticed that MF friendships seem far easier in fandom, especially in the fringier sections of it than in mainstream culture, a fact that keeps me firmly in fandom culture.
