One of the things I read in Science News at one point was that Type 2 may actually have a bacterial gut component. May be the surgery is bypassing the part of the gut the type 2 producing bacteria live?
But it does seem that something in the top of the small intestine is causing problems, which didn't really seem to start happening until the last half of the 1900s. Whether it is a New Bacteria or something we're now eating not agreeing with our systems designed for natural foods, but something is not right. I think the surgery is just by-passing the problem, rather than solving it.
As for Etanercept - the question becomes how often do you need the injections. Have you seen the cost for that stuff? Insurance Companies will have a cow. They are already changing the coverage for these New Age Drugs that cost a lot to keep people healthy from $20 co-pays to 1/3 - 1/2 of the
going rate for the drug.

How does the price of Etanercept compare to the cost of taking care of someone with Alzheimers?

Ah, that's long term nursing home care. Regular Health Insurance doesn't cover that.
Keeping them Out of the Nursing Home, if that is expensive, is money out of Their Pocket.
