I have a notion that pictures of nature are more attractive to most people than single fractals because nature shows mixtures of fractals.
I was wondering why the comments after the pictures were an argument about religion rather than anything about the sun. It turns out that they're the most recent comments in a 392 comment thread which started out with variations on "Gorgeous!" and a small amount of wiseass, but started being about religion within 50 comments. Atheism vs. religion had completely taken over by comment 100, and I didn't bother to find out if a discussion of astronomy broken out in the middle.
