A shrimp with a death ray, a shark that was probably a model for Alien, and a snake that doesn't really fly....but it's very good at gliding.

Why are the gliding snakes disturbing?

Because they land on you while you are looking at the ground to watch for snakes, even when you aren't under a tree.

I was going to say that Fred Saberhagen needed to know about the fricken laser shrimp, but Wikipedia says he died last year. 8~~~-({

(He wrote a story, "Smasher", about Berserkers defeated by shrimp.)

Tragically, they aren't laser shrimp. Afaik, there are no life-based lasers, but you never know what will turn up.

On the other hand, the hydraulic death beam with surface of the sun temperature trim is a testament to what you can do with ordinary mechanical forces.

What those shrimp do is so useful and pretty that I'm surprised it isn't more common. Maybe they get the claw equivalent of carpal tunnel.
