I tend to assume that you don't get riots of that scale without a long history of abusive police, but I admit I'm guessing. It's possible that the problem was started on the youth side-- self-righteous violence isn't a government monopoly.

Anyone have background information about what's been going on between the police and teenagers in Greece?

And I think there's been a mixture of abusive or at least untrustworthy authority going back to the aftermath of WWII.

Nice link, and I agree that this goes back to the Greek Civil War of the late forties. But that in turn goes back to the quarrels between the King and Venizelos in 1917...
