A moderate approach to bad memories

This is an account of treatment for shell shock, and says that's it's frequently effective to neither attempt to push bad memories away nor to dwell on them. It can help to find a good aspect of a bad memory. In effect, it's using will power to avoid meddling with your own mind.
It doesn't address inaccessible memories, just intrusive ones.
Maybe I've missed it, but I can't think of any modern source which recommends this approach.
