This one is a moderately normal arrangement of one of the usual carols, and is absolutely spectacular.

I was very pleased to listen to it without having any expectations, so I'm putting my comments about it under a cut.

I hadn't heard of Annie Lennox, but she's on my listen-to list now-- this is an incredibly strong and solid version of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen. And I'm a complete sucker for that sort of minor (modal?) melody.

The drumming took the top of my head off-- in a good way, of course.

The visuals are slightly pagan-flavored, but it's definitely a Christian reading of the carol. I don't think I've seen that combination before.

Annie Lennox is love. I adore her androgynous beauty. Her performance of "No More I-love-yous" on SNL [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp6js4RqXLo] rocked my world.

thanks for the vid! and blessed Yule!

It's very much not Annie Lennox's typical style. You might actually remember her as the frontwoman for The Eurhythmics ("Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"); she went on to have an independent career with a number of hits in the "Adult Alternative" format (e.g. "Walking on Broken Glass", "Why", "No More I Love Yous" and a cover of "Missionary Man".)

Annie Lennox is best-known as the female half of Eurthymics, a New Wave/pop band of the 1980s ("Sweet Dreams Are Made of This", "Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty-Four)"). She's been solo for about 20 years, doing less rock-like but still haunting material like "Walking on Broken Glass". And she sang the mournful "Into the West" that concludes the film of Return of the King. Since you liked this, I'd say there's a pretty good chance you'll like the earlier works as well.

Pretty much what I was about to say, but I did wish to add that I received the album as a Gift this season, and much of the arrangements are like the sample above. I am particularly hooked on 'Holly and The Ivy' and "In the Bleak Midwinter"
