I saw your comments in response to esr's post on "Cultural Literacy for Hackers" in his blog and thought you might be interested in reading a post of mine on depression among some mathematicians (http://gregbo.livejournal.com/39971.html). It may have some bearing on hackers (who are perhaps predisposed to thinking about infinity and related computational concepts).
