How do I remove all vestiges of Yahoo from Firefox?

In particular, I've got Yahoo! on the top row with File, Edit, View, etc..

I don't know if it makes sense to be so angry about this, but I didn't ask for Yahoo! anything. I don't want the option of a Yahoo! toolbar, and I don't want to see it anywhere on my screen.

Go into Tools and Add-ons and see what can be done there. A separate window should pop up listing all add-ons, and you can disable or delete from there. If that doesn't work, I don't know.

If it's a text entry widget, it's Firefox's built-in search. click on the Yahoo! logo. You'll get a menu of search engines; pick one other than Yahoo! Go to "Manage search engines" if you want to delete it.

It does, because they took over - however unmaliciously - control of your computer. I can't even think what a menu would be good for, and unfortunately I have no idea how to remove it.

Any idea how it happened? If there's an addition to the menubar, I'm guessing it's an add-on of some kind, probably an extension. Select "Add-Ons" under the "Tools" menu, and hunt around in the resulting dialog.

Thanks, but I don't know how it happened. The only add-on I've got is text area cache.

There doesn't seem to be a "put yahoo on the menu bar" add-on in the add-on dialogue.

This says there's supposed to be a "remove this" in the Yahoo menu, but there isn't.

at some point, while you were installing something, you skipped or blew past a 'free' thing that said 'Install Yahoo Toolbar' (which is actually what they hope you'll do; you just need to miss it *once* and they get you. EVERY time I upgrade my Open Office or Java it asks to install Yahoo! tools).

I don't know if you're on a PC or Mac. On a PC, if you move over the toolbar (any part of it except for the entry fields and buttons) and right click, it will show you a list of all the menu bars being shown, and you can unclick Yahoo!.

I believe the same, using cmd-and click, will work for a Mac, but I am not 100% sure.

I've got a PC.

I've found something which will hide or reveal the menu bar, which is good if I want a little more screen.

However, if I click on an unassigned part of the toolbar or the menu bar, I get Menu Bar, Navigation Toolbar, Bookmarks Toolbar, Zone Alarm Community Toolbar, Yahoo! Toolbar, Add-on Bar, Tabs on Top, and Customize. Customize gives me the choice of adding some icons.

There is no list of menu bars.

Yahoo Toolbar is the menubar to uncheck.

Do not uncheck it. Unchecking it just hides it.

Instead, close Firefox. Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs (XP) or Control Panel -> Programs And Features (Vista/7). When the list of instlaled programs appears, scroll down it until you see "Yahoo toolbar" and uninstall it from there.

If all else fails and you're on a Mac, go rummaging around in Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles under your personal home directory. This can be risky, though; deleting the wrong files could break Firefox.

I noticed that it keeps backups of my bookmarks forever. I deleted a few hundred old backups while I was there.

What was said above, plus if you go to your control panel, then "Add/remove Programs", you can remove "Yahoo Toolbar" permanently there.

Thanks-- the existence of Add/remove programs sounds like something worth knowing, but there's no Yahoo anything listed there.

I'm trying to get rid of Yahoo! on my menu bar-- it's not just the Toolbar.

I'm past the screaming rage stage (Get that piece of shit off my computer-- NOW!) but I'd probably be a little happier if I were rid of it.

I found the answer. Tools->add-ons-> and then disable Yahoo in both extensions and plug-ins.

Even with the toolbar disabled, there are some add-ons that I had to disable. I mentioned how to do that in my footnote to my question.
