Some of you may have read Scott Kim's _Inversions_, a collection of words and phrases which read the same way (or occasionally a different word) upside down. That was in the 80's.

More recently, he's been animating them.....

I was impressed by him for about four minutes, and then I started noticing how much noise I had to ignore for the signal to be understood. I had to pretend there weren't these obscure fiddly bits floating under some letters and hanging off of others, and stare intently in order to make the 'proper' interpretation take precedence over all the meaningless ones. Once in a while, he hits something squarely, but his belief that he can do it with anything leads him to use filler that doesn't contribute to the effect.
