I wanted my previous post to be on the main point so here's some other stuff.

It has come to my attention that the current administration has used a certain amount of libertarian rhetoric. Your ideology looks pretty bad if it falls into the hands of malignant idiots, too. It's not just communism that happens to (though I think communism is a bad idea on anything but the very small, voluntary scale), but in Zimbawe, there's murder and incredible destruction being done in the name of urban renewal and law enforcement--quite ordinary political views. Sound political structure makes good sense and good will easier, but iit doesn't substitute for them.

I know my computer thinks it's 2006. I've tried to correct it by clicking on the time thingy and it looks as though it's corrected, but lj won't let me post unless I alter the time stamp.

From the Red Cross

# The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city.

If the Red Cross could get into the shelter, it could give food and water to people who need them desperately--life and death desperately. If people were attracted to the shelter by food and water, they'd be easier to evacuate. I believe the Red Cross is competent to evaluate whether bringing food and water to the shelter is a good idea.

I'm not sure what the best course of action is. I've seen a suggestion of a march on Washington and it might be the right thing--any other ideas? Or ideas for a right thing? I don't think pressuring Congress is going to do much. Afaik, Congress would let the Red Cross in.

I wouldn't say I've exactly been defending the Bush adminitstration, but I've thought that what they've been doing has largely been the result of greed, incompetence, irresponsibility, laziness, and in the case of Katrina, panic. Those are enough to be disasterous, but I didn't think Bush and crew were driven by malice. The easy thing would be to let the Red Cross in. They aren't doing the easy thing.

This should probably build to a climax of indignation, but if you aren't already indignant and horrified and terrified, I don't know what to say to you. I'd rather get this posted now.

has it that the National Guard is (was?) keeping the Red Cross out of the Superdome.

I can't find that link on the Red Cross site, even though it starts off with www.redcross.org and I'm using cut and paste.

Does anyone know whether the National Guard is or was actually keeping the Red Cross out?

My guesses about the link are either that someone is putting false stuff up on the Red Cross site or that someone at the Red Cross is trying to sneak out true information or that there's just some broken html on the site.

I very much want to know whether this is true or not.

I'm having trouble with my time stamp. Let's see if it's healed itself.

Update: Hot damn. It's working again, even if I seem to be in 2006. The problem is with my computer, but when I tried to update the clock (Windows 98, click on the time for clock/calendar changes), lj wouldn't let me post articles at all.

Since then, I've reverted my drive to an earlier date (which didn't seem to work), rebooted a number of times (which may have worked), and read the FAQ on how to post by email (which may have worked by Murphy magic).

Any advice on more sophisticated ways of getting my computer back to 2005 would be appreciated.

From Jane Galt:

Please, dig deep. I've given money to the red cross, and money to this effort, which I blogged about earlier. Being a journalist, I'm afraid I can't afford matching funds, nor do I have anything nifty to offer like the folks at Crooked Timber have. But I'll offer this: for every hundred dollars you donate to a recognized charity (or the Lake Providence effort), I will mail you a homemade pound cake. I'm a pretty good baker. If you donate $250, I will write a blog post about anything you like*. It's on the honor system; just use the NZ Bear registry, or email me.

From Mindles H. Dreck:

I tell you what. I'll donate up to another $1,000 to match further contributions referencing this blog as logged on Truth Laid Bear. On your honor - you actually made the donation, and you made it after reading this. Send me an email (dreck-at-janegalt.net).

UPDATE: Thanks Amber, Mark Garbowski and Dr. Ann Sherman for donating.

More generally, are matching offers being collected anywhere? Should they be collected?
