I've noticed that when people talk about getting their asses in gear or getting their lazy asses out of a chair, or any such metaphors, it's pretty much about things they aren't doing.

Is that sort of talking to yourself generally ineffective, or does it work some of the time?

Sometimes it helps, yeah. It's a good reminder that you *are* being lazy, which make you consciously decide whether to remain lazy or to stop being lazy.

I do note there's a class of people (of which I am a part-time member) who just like saying that sort of thing and not following up, either due to a need to feel persecuted or as an excuse to others why they're not doing stuff ("look! I'm trying! Quit bugging me so I can go back to being lazy!")

Hmm. That last one could be a quote.

I don't usually say that, and I'd think it would be ineffective if I did. However, once I was talking about writing/studying, and youngersib and I realized that what we needed to do was to get our asses in our chairs, to write or study--and that seemed funny and did seem to work.

I sometimes talk to an ex-girlfriend of mine , and when I do so, she usually ends teh conversation with the phrase "time to motivate". Oddly enough, she usually then goes and gets done whatever motivated her to use the phrase...

works better for me if I leave out "lazy." What works best for me lately is "I'll feel better when x is done."

That's very sensible-sounding. I'll try it on myself.
